More restaurants a walk away

At the Spar Shopping Centre about 300m from the guesthouse are two of Durban's great restaurants - 9th Avenue Bistro, possibly Durban's finest fine dining restaurants, and Green Mango which receives rave reviews for it's Thai cuisine. Joops Place is also famous for it's Dutch steaks.

Nude in Durban

We paid a visit with guests to Durban Nudist Beach at Umhlanga.. was pretty busy with some yummy guys as well as heterosexual couples, all blending into the seascape. Ocean was warm and lovely too. (Wayne (Moscow, Andy UK and Llewellyn, guesthouse co-owner in the top photo)

The weekend started with drinks in the guesthouse pub - Llewellyn, Andy, Ton (Belgium), Wayne and Rene' (Netherlands) - always a good start.

On Sunday we did a pub crawl drinking cocktails at BeanBagBohemia, Cubana (yummy nachos), and supper at Spiga. Awesome stuff!!

Eating out in Durban

We don't eat out often enough, but when we do, our favourite pub and restaurant where the guys are hotter and the food good and resonably priced is Billy the Bums. We even have a loyalty card going there.

We joined guests Phillip (left) and Renier (right) for a drink and dinner at Billys, forgetting that Tuesday was ladies night, so there were a whole load of hot chicks there... Mondays are best when it's Burger and Beer special... mmm

Nightcap at Harveys

Friend and waiter at Harveys, Graham, with Llewellyn (centre) and myself (Dave)

Fine dining and elegant decor at Harveys

We don't often have our main course there as it's fine dining and top of the range, but last night we popped in after dinner at Billy The Bums, for a nightcap at Harveys.

A glass of sherry and a delicious Chocolate Mousse cake to share.. just the trick before home.

Of course we drank far too much wine and are having a struggle today @#%$. Congrats guys and thanks for sharing your special night with us.

Visit to Grahamstown

We love visiting different parts of our own country and this weekend past we travelled to the Eastern Cape Province to the beautiful little town of Grahamstown for their annual Arts Festival.
In the pics are my kids Mark (left) and Kate-Lynn with myself (Dave, right in photos) and partner Llewellyn (blonde). The Festival was a blast and we had an awesome time seeing some of the best talent South Africa has to offer, combined with the largest craft market I have ever seen and fab restaurants and evening entertainment.. particularly Pirates!!

Bar fun

Having fun at the Guesthouse Pub are Wessel (left) our new part-time barman Jaco (centre) and Dave (guesthouse co-owner). Jaco will be looking after guests once a month.

Riaan and Michael from Johannesburg joined us for their second July Handicap Race day at Greyville just down the road from the Guesthouse. This was a Facebook event.

I took a short video clip at the races of the naked "13th Race" after the running of the last horse race. Unfortunately I was a bit far from the runners this time, but here's a snapshot from my video.

After a few drinks at the Guesthouse, it's time to get to The Lounge.. here's Dan, our guest from Canberra with guesthouse co-owner Dave and local boy Sandhip Singh at The Lounge. Dan said there are such yummy boys in Durban, he will have to come back soon.

New Gay Club opens

It's not often that a new Gay Club and Bar opens in Durban, so Melanie needs to be congratulated on taking the step of opening Club Barazz.

It's right near uShaka, which at this moment is not the best part of the world, but the photos look pretty decent and is a welcome addition to the Gay and Lesbian scene in Durban.

The Club is situated at 309 Point Road (now Mohatma Ghandi Road) and they have both a website and a Facebook group. Click on the links for more information.

About the town..

Llewellyn and I have been having some fun out and about the town trying the different flavours of Durban. We have also extended an invitation to other gay guys from the Gay Durban Facebook group to join us. Our second little excursion was to Moyo Restaurant and beach pub at the uShaka Marine World complex near the harbour entrance on Sunday. The fusion/Afro decorated restaurant offers African and unique flavours drawn from many cultures and is a hit with the tourists. Above is a chicken platter we shared.

Lamp shades resembling jellly-fish fit in with the marine theme of the beachfront Acquarium where the restaurant is situated.

Face-painting and blankets if the sea breeze gets cool are just some of the quaint touches the restaurant offers.

Dinner at Harveys

Andrew Draper has turned on the magic with his new Restaurant Harvey's which opened in Durban recently. Our Facebook group Gay Durban organised a dinner there this week and the 9 of us were each overawed by the taste extravaganza and mouthwatering creations.
The dishes come in portions of 4, so it's best to go in a group and share the spread - in the photos from top are Lee and Mark, Wayne, and myself (Dave) and Llewellyn. Well done Andrew, we will be back!!
You will find Harvey's in Innes Road, at the top end of Florida Road and bookings can be made on tel: 031- 3125706.

Cru Wine Bar opens

Cru Wine Bar and Deli in Hillcrest, just a short drive west of Durban, opened recently to much acclaim. The Wine Bar is owned by Riaan and Willem and is a new concept to Durban - boutique and carefully selected wines are sold by the glass from self-service cooler machines accessed by a smart card which has a pre-loaded value. As the card value diminishes, it can be topped up to a value of your choice. In this way you can afford to have a tester amount, a half glass or full glass of expensive wines you may not wish to ever buy by the bottle. There are over 40 wines to choose from as well as a selection of fine whisky and cognac.

In the photos are from top Llewellyn, Willem, Riaan and Dave toasting the opening of Cru, Dave and Llewellyn enjoying the Blues and Jazz evening held there from 4 - 7pm on Sundays, and Callan, the excellent singer who provided the entertainment.

Their events programme is as follows:

Friday 7pm till late: live music with Dominic Holmes

Sat Sharks Rugby on the screen - Open sandwich with ice cold beer: R35

Sunday: Continental Champagne breakfast - from R79pp; then 4pm - 7pm jazz and blues with Callan Maloney
